Since 2015, Historic Macon has called attention to endangered places across Macon-Bibb County through its Fading Five program. The preservation group is now seeking nominations from the public for the 2021 list.

In 2014, Macon lost two historic structures — Tremont Temple Baptist Church and the former Charles H. Douglass home — to commercial development, prompting the initiative. 

To date, Historic Macon has put 15 properties on the list. So far, nine of them have been saved and protected, in large part by creating a strategic preservation plan for each of the listed properties. Just one Fading Five property has been lost. 

If you know of a place you think deserves consideration, go to the Historic Macon website, historicmacon.org. Look for the “Advocate” heading. You’ll find Macon’s Fading Five information there, as well as a 2021 nomination form. The nomination deadline is Friday, July 2.

Macon’s Fading Five program works hand in hand with another Historic Macon initiative, the Saving Places Index. SPI has identified priority places across Macon-Bibb County for preservation, land conservation and recreation — places that contribute to our community identity. Many of them have been forgotten or neglected. 

Historic Macon has helped preserve hundreds of historic buildings over the years. The Fading Five program is another tool to help promote the community’s rich, diverse heritage.

The 2021 Fading Five list will be announced in August.
