First Ever Day of Action in Central Georgia June 29th
Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO
Wednesday, June 19th, 2019
United Way of Central Georgia is organizing the first annual Day of Action for Central Georgia. Day of Action is a worldwide United Way event, typically in June, where tens of thousands of volunteers and advocates combine to fight for the health, education and financial stability of every person in every community. For the first time, United Way of Central Georgia has joined the global effort by marking June 29th as the Day of Action in Central Georgia.
The day will be filled with hundreds of volunteers and multiple volunteer opportunities in Pleasant Hill including: community clean-up, food box giveaway, kids’ field day, community baby shower and health fair, smoke alarm and light bulb installation, diaper and sports/bike equipment giveaways, and more. The event will kick-off that Saturday morning with a pancake breakfast for volunteers prepared by the Macon-Bibb’s Sherriff’s Department and conclude with a free neighborhood cookout for Pleasant Hill residents and volunteers at noon.
“Day of Action is an invitation for people and organizations in the community to LIVE UNITED and take action to address a variety of challenges. It is a day that we ask the community to help us put our mission into action by volunteering to improve the building blocks for a good quality of life – education, financial stability and health. When we started organizing the Day of Action a few months ago, community partners immediately jumped on board. From Macon-Bibb County Fire Department and Sheriff’s office, to local businesses like Sheridan Construction and MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union, to the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank, U Create Macon and Central Georgia CARES, the support generated by this single day is electrifying,” said George McCanless, President and CEO of United Way of Central Georgia. “We expect to see over a thousand people including volunteers and residents out in Pleasant Hill on June 29th. It will be a powerful picture to see that many volunteers come together to help others in need.”
United Way of Central Georgia will host a press conference Wednesday, June 19th at 11:00 am at LH Williams Elementary school. Organizers will announce the day’s events to the neighborhood, unveil the posters that will be hung throughout the neighborhood and begin canvassing the community with a flyer and questionnaire including information to residents about the location of various events of the Day of Action. All media are encouraged to attend the press conference.
