Middle Georgia State University is now designated a National Center of Digital Forensics Excellence by the U.S. Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center.
 
The designation means Middle Georgia State has access to advanced digital forensic resources through the defense department's Cyber Crime Center and is recognized to have educators that are capable of effectively delivering theory and practicum and providing students with greater access to unique internship or employment opportunities.
 
Middle Georgia State students who successfully complete a bachelor's degree in Information Technology in the Cyberforensics concentration will receive a certificate of completion, thanks to the new designation. The certificate can be exchanged for its corresponding Department of Defense certification when the student is employed with a federal employer or federal contractor.
 
"This is a significant achievement for Middle Georgia State," said Dr. Kevin Floyd, associate dean of the University's School of Information Technology. "We are the first institution in the state of Georgia and one of only 14 schools in the United States to earn this designation."
 
The National Centers of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence is a partnership between academia, standards bodies, and the U.S. government to establish best practices for digital forensics education. Education providers are held to digital forensics education standards based upon knowledge, skills, and abilities used in the field. This approach advances the discipline of digital forensics and increases the number of qualified professionals to meet the needs of law enforcement, counterintelligence, national defense, and legal communities.
