A new exhibit, entitled “Untold Stories: Macon’s African American History” – featuring archival images, documents, historical artifacts, and works of art – will open on Sunday, September 10, 2017, at the Tubman Museum.

“Untold Stories” documents the people and places that have had a significant impact on the African American community in Macon. This exhibition is also important because it marks the beginning of a partnership between the Tubman Museum and Historic Macon Foundation, local institutions that share common ideals and common goals.

The Historic Macon Foundation is the “Presenting Sponsor” of the “Untold Stories” exhibition. Their dedication to this exhibition underscores the organization’s mission, which is to revitalize Macon-Bibb County by preserving its unique architecture and sharing the rich history of our diverse community. This sponsorship is an expansion of HMF’s work to preserve and share the history of the Macon and Bibb County communities.

The mission of the Tubman Museum, which will have the exhibition on display at least through the end of 2017, is to educate people about African American art, history, and culture. Toward that end, it organizes programming that enriches people of the various cultures who live in and visit this growing community. “Untold Stories” represents another step in the Tubman Museum’s initiatives of telling local stories that illuminate the African American experience.

The Opening Reception for “Untold Stories: Macon’s African American History” is on Sunday, September 10, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. in the Tubman Museum’s Peyton Anderson Rotunda.

Admission to this event is free for Tubman Museum Members and $5.00 for general admission.
