In a first for on Georgia CEO, Aracely Caraveo-Real, Spanish language teacher and librarian at St. Peter Claver Catholic School discusses in Spanish the rich and storied history of the school that was founded in 1903.

I am Aracely Caraveo-Real, the Spanish language teacher and librarian at St. Peter Claver Catholic School on Ward St, Macon.  We are located just 1 block off Vineville Ave and close to Downtown Macon.

Our school has a rich and storied history, founded in 1903 by Saint Katharine Drexel. Drexel's mission was to educate and empower Black and Native American children, and we continue to embody her ideals to this day.

Our school places great emphasis on both academic preparedness and service-oriented values.

Our alumni are leaders in their respective fields, and we take pride in graduating generations of students who have gone on to make a difference locally and nationally.

We firmly believe that every student, regardless of financial background, deserves access to a quality education, and we work closely with families to ensure that this remains the case.  We proudly say; we are mission-driven, not tuition-driven and we will make it work.

At St. Peter Claver, inclusivity is a top priority. Though we are a historic Black Catholic school, we have always welcomed students from diverse cultural backgrounds, even before integration of schools was required by law.

This now includes our Latino student population, which like our local Latino population, is growing and currently makes up approximately 20% of our student body.

We are proud to celebrate and honor their unique traditions and histories, which we incorporate into our curriculum and school events.

For example, we recognize and celebrate all of the major Hispanic Catholic feast days, including those of San Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe. We run an annual Spanish language Spelling Bee!

We also host a Hispanic Health Fair in partnership with Mercer University, we attend Macon’s Hispanic Festival, and we host a great Day of the Dead Festival in our local Historic Black Cemetery at Linwood in Pleasant Hill.

Through these initiatives, all of our students, regardless of background, gain a deeper understanding of the importance of both Latino history and culture.

At St. Peter Claver, we strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where all cultures and heritages are respected and celebrated.

We encourage anyone who is interested to visit our school, and learn more about wonderful Catholic values, and our programs, like our STEM program, free after school tutoring, free 6 week summer school for registered students.
