Senator John Kennedy: Week Ten Under the Gold Dome

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, March 20th, 2024

With only five legislative days remaining in the 2024 session, Georgia Senate members are diligently working both within their respective committees and on the Senate floor to pass good legislation for the people of Georgia.

This week, members of the General Assembly attended the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame Unveiling Ceremony, paying tribute to Georgia’s veterans for their selfless service to our nation. Year after year, this profoundly moving ceremony is one of the highlights of the legislative session. I am proud to support legislative initiatives that positively impact those who have devoted their lives to protecting freedoms that we often take for granted.

Last week, I was honored to support House Bill 880, which furthers our commitment to enhancing Georgia’s workforce by enabling military spouses to utilize an existing occupational license in good standing from another state to secure employment at a Georgia business. Georgia’s military spouses often lose valuable working time between relocations. This game-changing legislation would expedite their journey into the workforce while simultaneously easing their overall transition when they are assigned to a Georgia military institution. Our military spouses sacrifice a great deal for our nation, and I am delighted to be in support of one of the strongest military spouse license bills in the nation.

Last week, Senate members also joined Governor Brian P. Kemp as he signed Senate Bill 332 into law. This legislation empowers the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission to begin its mission to ensure District Attorneys uphold the laws on the books. I take pride in our collective efforts as members of the General Assembly to advance this bill, I am confident that it will lead to a more balanced criminal justice system

Additionally, House Bill 1185 passed favorably out of the Senate Finance Committee this week. This bill aims to reduce inflated property taxes by providing a floating homestead exemption for qualifying homeowners and caps property evaluations at 3%. It is my hope that these savings will give Georgians the opportunity to reinvest in our economy now or save for the future.

Each week under the Gold Dome, constituents, associations and organizations alike come to the Capitol to speak to legislators and host events with public officials. This week, the Senate Chamber had the honor of receiving Irish Minister Peter Burke. It was a pleasure to introduce the renowned minister ahead of St. Patrick’s Day as our state honors the perspectives and accomplishments of Georgia’s Irish community. Georgia’s Irish Business community employs thousands of hardworking Georgians and they are the eighth largest source of foreign direct investment in our state. I was also honored to introduce Judge Bryant Culpepper, a distinguished Georgia public servant. A former House Representative, Superior Court Judge and a retired Colonel in the Georgia National Guard, Judge Culpepper is an example of the embodiment of public service.

Please never hesitate to contact my office if I can assist with legislative matters. I hope to see you under the Gold Dome soon as the 2024 Legislative Session enters its final weeks.
