Historic Fort Hawkins’ podcast series recently reached a major milestone by recording at least one listener in each of the 50 states. The 4-part series on Macon’s birthplace has also reached listeners in Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Singapore, and Turkey. *

Launched by Middle Georgia Podcasts, the series made its debut in March with an interview with the fort’s namesake, Col, Benjamin Hawkins, as portrayed by Marty Willet. The second episode featured Dianne Dent Wilcox, author of Fort Hawkins and Frontier Georgia, who shared her thoughts about the local and national importance of this historic landmark. Episode #3 featured four former students from Fort Hawkins Elementary School, which occupied part of the fort’s footprint for more than 55 years. In episode #4 archaeologist Dan Elliott talked about several excavation projects that have been conducted at Fort Hawkins since the 1930’s.

A fifth and final episode of the Fort Hawkins Podcast series will be released in September and will focus on the present and future for this historic landmark. Fort Hawkins is now open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12noon to 4pm, and admission and parking are both free.

In cooperation with the Fort Hawkins foundation, this podcast series is produced by Middle Georgia radio veteran Ben Sandifer, a 2016 inductee in the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame, and 8 time “Gabby Award” winner from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. Middle GA Podcasts channel was launched in 2020 and includes a variety of audio podcasts about the businesses, culture, events, history, and people of Middle Georgia.
