Today, Senator John F. Kennedy (R – Macon) was elected to serve as the President Pro Tempore of the Georgia State Senate. President Pro Tempore Kennedy was elected by unanimous vote of the Senate body.

“It is a true honor to be elected by my colleagues in the Senate to serve as the next President Pro Tempore,” said Pro Tem Kennedy. “With new leaders in both the House and Senate, I know that the 2023 Legislative Session will be a historic one. I look forward to putting in the work to continue to serve the people of Georgia and to uphold the standard as the best state in the nation to live work and raise a family.”

The President Pro Tempore of the Senate serves as presiding officer over the Senate in the absence of the President of the Senate, the Lieutenant Governor. He is responsible for managing the administrative duties of the Senate and serves as a member of the Senate Committee on Assignments. Pro Tem Kennedy was first elected to the Georgia Senate in 2014. After serving as Governor Nathan Deal’s Floor Leader during his first term, his Republican colleagues elected him to serve as Majority Caucus Chairman in 2017, and he served that position until he received the nomination to serve as President Pro Tempore of the Senate this past November.
