Bike Walk Macon Celebrates Bike Walk Month in May

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Wednesday, May 6th, 2020

Bike Walk Macon hosts Macon Bike Walk Month each year in May by hosting several free events that celebrate biking and walking, but this year will be different than past years as we continue following the guidelines of health experts in helping prevent the spread of COVID-19. To help celebrate in a different way, Bike Walk Macon has organized several virtual gatherings and solo riding and walking events and activities to ensure that community members can still have a fun and impactful Bike Walk Month. Some events will take place on specific days, and some allow Maconites to participate at their own leisure.

“Every month is Bike Walk Month at Bike Walk Macon, but we go above and beyond to celebrate the joys of biking and walking in May each year,” says Bike Walk Macon executive director, Rachel Umana. “Since we can’t ride and walk together this year, we’ve planned several virtual events not only to encourage people to get out and ride or walk more, but also to get people more familiar with biking and walking as a growing mode of transportation.”

This year, Bike Walk Macon has organized the following events and activities to help celebrate Macon Bike Walk Month:

Jane's Walk (May 1 -3): free, virtual citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs.

Commuter Conversations over Coffee (Every Friday in May at 9 am): Catch up with Macon biking and walking commuters over a Zoom chat and coffee from the comfort of your home.

Virtual Bike Party (May 14 at 5:30 pm): Our monthly group ride is now virtual. Take a leisurely bike ride and post a video of your personal bike party in the Facebook event.

My Bike Macon Photo Series (Tuesdays and Thursdays in May): Follow the Bike Walk Macon Facebook page to view photographs and stories of local bike commuters by photographer Dsto Moore.

Love to Ride (All month): Resolve to bike more in the month of May. Log your bike trips at www.lovetoride.net. Use your bike instead of your car to get where you need to go and you’ll be eligible for national raffle prizes.

Virtual Bike Walk Macon (All month): Join Bike Walk Macon staff, board members, and local community members as they stroll, run, or ride around Macon and Facebook live their adventures on the Bike Walk Macon page.

#BikeMatchMacon (All month): Bike Walk Macon is partnering with Re-Cycle Macon to connect Maconites who have an extra, ready-to-ride bicycle to Maconites who need one. Donate or request a bicycle at bikewalkmacon.com/bikematchmacon.
