Coliseum Health System to Host Two Medication Take Back Events

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Wednesday, March 13th, 2019

Coliseum Health System will host two medication take back events in conjunction with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.  Middle Georgia residents can bring their old or expired medications so that they don’t end up in the wrong hands.  The first event will be held at Coliseum Medical Centers on Saturday, March 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. near the Emergency Room.  Anyone wishing to drop off old, expired or unwanted drugs can do so without even getting out of their car.  All donors will receive a free medication safety item in return.

Dr. Richard Rubio, Chief Medical Officer for Coliseum Health System, said that this take back event will take all types of medication, whether it is prescribed or over-the-counter, but a big goal is to dispose of excess opioids.  He said, “There are often leftover pills that aren’t taken, whether it be because the drugs aren’t needed anymore or if an individual has passed away and unused pills remain. Take back events like this are vital to removing excess opioids and are an example of how we can work together to address the drug crisis.”

A second medication take back event will be held on April 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Coliseum Northside Hospital near the Emergency Room.
