To appreciate a culture, one has to learn about its roots.

Robins’ Diversity Council will educate the base community throughout November to help people learn about and appreciate American Indian heritage.

The council will create weekly newsletters for the month of November focused on educating the base community about various American Indian tribes.

The newsletters will cover topics such as the Creek, Muskogee and Cherokee tribes, details about history and lifestyles, and ways to learn, celebrate, and support the culture. They can be found published each week on the Robins Facebook page at www.facebook.com/RobinsPublicAffairs/.

In addition to the newsletter, the council will host a children’s book reading event at Robins’ Chapel at 10:30 a.m., Nov. 21. Children will be read the book, “Grandmother Spider Brings the Sun: A Cherokee Story,” by Geri Keams.

Staff Sgt. Janice Acevedo, knowledge manager in the 78th Air Base Wing Communications Directorate, and a Robins Diversity Council volunteer, said the observance gives people the opportunity to get to know the American Indian culture better.

“Native American and Alaska Native Indians have contributed abundantly to our nation in many areas including, but not limited to, medicine, natural foods, conservation, appreciation for the earth, the military, art, culture, character and virtue,” she said. “We must learn the truth of their heritage and take time to commemorate it, because it has impacted every North American and our welcomed visitors. My hope is that through observance and education we can all become more aware and more inspired to unite toward worthy and altruistic endeavors.”
