Friday, September 14th, 2018
Tired motorists along Interstate 75 in Monroe County and Interstate 475 northbound in Bibb County once again have a place to stop and stretch their legs.
The rest areas in those counties have been reopened after a final inspection. The facilities had been closed for renovations since this past January.
Visitors to the rest areas will notice renovations including parking lot repair, drainage repair, parking lot re-striping, repair existing sidewalks, landscaping, ADA paths of travel upgrades, picnic canopy repair, roof and gutter replacement, replacement of HVAC systems, repair and/or replacement of all exterior and interior lighting with LED lighting, installation of occupancy sensors to lighting in restrooms, replacement of existing toilet fixtures with automatic flush valves, replacement of floor tile in all areas, replacement of counters, mirrors and electric hand dryers, repair and repainting of all walls and ceilings.
These major renovations were awarded to Headley Construction Corporation at a construction cost of $3,085,000.
Funds for the renovation and beautification of the Georgia welcome centers and rest areas came from revenues collected from the Georgia LOGO program. The Georgia LOGO program offers businesses advertising along highway interchanges through placement of names and logos on signs approaching exits. It generates approximately $3.3 million annually.
