About the Film

Switzerland-France, Drama, 138 minutes, Rated R, 2018, Directed by Xavier Beauvois

“The Guardians” is an emotionally-charged story of love, loss, and perseverance that develops against the backdrop of World War I. When the men are away at war, the women of the Paridier farm must wrestle with the workload of managing the land and acquiring independence at home. Award-winning filmmaker Xavier Beauvois (Of Gods and Men) showcases breathtaking images of the French countryside, untouched by the horrors of the Great War, while focusing on the intricate drama that unfolds on the home front.

“A historical drama that doesn’t lose itself in decorative period detail, a beautifully photographed chronicle of rural existence that refrains from picturesque sentimentality and grinding misery, the usual modes for this kind of film.” – The New York Times

“A serious-minded and...rather powerful portrait of women getting by in a world where all the men are either gone or gone mad.” – The Hollywood Reporter
