Landfill to Temporarily Close Two days a Week to Ensure Compliance

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Friday, August 17th, 2018

In its most recent inspection the Walker Road Landfill earned a score of 90 from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Environmental Protection Division. The report noted several areas that needed some work, including adding rip rap or similar erosion control measures at the discharge end of down drains; some drainage areas being overfilled or totally obliterated; and woody plants not outlined in the plan growing on the fill areas.

In order to ensure compliance is maintained and improvements made, the landfill will be closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the end of August so staff can focus on the below projects. The landfill will be open to the public on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Commercial customers are being notified of the temporary change, and signage is being posted at the landfill to let residential customers know.

Roads need to be graded and pot holes filled in, and more roads need to built into the borrow pit to excavate dirt.

Grass needs to be cut on the entire site. Due to all the rain the past 4 months the grass is growing too fast for us to cut on a part time basis.

Remove sediment from the ditches and regrade them.

Replace and add more drainage pipes to control the water flow.

Revegetate disturbed areas of the landfill to control erosion and rills.

Detect and remove leachate out breaks. Due to all the rain this is a main priory to correct.

Build berms to control surface water, slowing it down to prevent erosion.

Excavate wet dirt from borrow pit so it can dry and be used for cover, berms, and revegetation of disturbed areas.

Pumping water from borrow pit and ponds. All the rain has filled several of the ponds.

Macon-Bibb residents have the ability to drop off one free load of trash up to 500 points at the landfill every month. Anything over 500 pounds and any additional loads that month will be charged at a rate of $32.75 per ton. To receive the free load up to 500 pounds, the person dropping off the trash must have a Macon-Bibb address on their driver’s license.
