Introduction by Yvonne Gabriel

The premise of the program "Portraits and Poetry" is that communication can be effective in the disciplines of painting and writing. Our many thoughts per minute can often not be proficiently captured or verbalized. In times of ever-faster communication it serves us to slow down and try out other methods to isolate a thought and expand on it.

In our time together at the hospitable Family Investment Center of Macon Housing Authority, the students from East Macon established communication through their arts. We did not talk about our lives; we existed together in a space of harmony and friendship through painting and poetry.

Unwittingly, we revealed more of ourselves than spoken words could have done. In addition, some of the students discovered a new hobby, a talent for poetry, or a love for painting. I was honored to be part of this experience and thankful to the Macon Arts Alliance for having the right idea about how to spread blessings in the Macon community.
