Attorney General Chris Carr today the following statement on legislation to combat the abuse and exploitation of older, at-risk Georgians. House Bill 803 was introduced by Representative Wendell Willard.

“The abuse and exploitation of our older, at-risk Georgians is simply unacceptable,” said Attorney General Chris Carr. “Working alongside local, state and federal partners, we have seen an uptick in this type of behavior in all its forms: mental, physical, emotional and financial. We believe House Bill 803 will give our law enforcement and legal entities more resources to protect our state’s aging population, and we appreciate Representative Willard and the Georgia General Assembly’s attention to this important issue.”

Co-sponsors for House Bill 803 include Representatives Sharon Cooper, Clay Cox, Eddie Lumsden, Ed Rynders and Sheila Nelson.

House Bill 803 will take the following actions:

Prohibit trafficking of a disabled adult, elder person or resident for the purpose of their resources;

Outline the elements of such crime; and

Provide for penalties, mandatory sentences and exceptions.
