Rebuilt I-16 Rest Areas Reopening Monday

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Tuesday, November 7th, 2017

Both Laurens County Interstate 16 rest areas will reopen on Monday, Nov. 13 by 8 a.m. Each facility closed in September 2016 for the demolition and rebuild.

Aarene Contracting, LLC from Alpharetta completed the $3.6 million contract.

During the assessments, it was discovered that it would be less expensive to re-build from the ground up versus retro-fitting the existing buildings standing between Exit 42 and Exit 49.

Each rest area showcases state-of-the-art amenities including:

  • LED lighting

  • Rain water harvesting system which will be used for toilet water before city water is utilized

  • Upgraded parking lot and exterior building lighting

  • Parking lot repairs and re-striping

  • HVAC systems

Improvements to these facilities together with other statewide welcome centers and rest areas are funded by advertising revenue collected by the State Transportation Board’s interstate exit sign Logo Program. There isn’t any taxpayer money involved in these projects.
