Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Friday, November 17th, 2017

On Thursday, November 16, Main Street Macon held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of downtown Macon’s newest business, Falling Star Records. Strategically located next to the Cox Capitol Theatre, the new record shop at 362 Second Street offers new and vintage vinyl to music enthusiasts in the heart of downtown Macon.

“Vinyl records have been my passion and hobby for years, said Tony Doolin, manager of Falling Star Records. “A hobby that I’ve been able to share with my wife, Ashley. Record collecting and listening is a lifestyle and a full musical experience. Falling Star Records is an extension of the music we already spin on 100.9 The Creek. I am so excited to be able, along with Wes and The Creek, to offer this passion of mine to Macon and Central Georgia. I want to thank my wife for her help in all of this and to everyone that buys and supports local!”

The opening of Falling Star Records is a testament to the growing music scene in downtown Macon. Since RedWal Music Company and Capricorn Records, downtown Macon has heavily influenced the trajectory of American music with acts like Otis Redding, the Allman Brothers Band, and Little Richard broadcasting a uniquely Macon-sound worldwide. Today, a new renaissance of music and creativity is taking place in downtown Macon with support from business owners like Wes Griffith, owner of Moonhanger Group and co-owner of 100.9 The Creek FM, Macon’s local Americana radio station.

“My parents owned and operated a record store on Vineville Avenue while attending college at Mercer,” said Wes Griffith, co-owner Creek Media, LLC, the company that owns and operates 100.9 The Creek FM, 11th Hour, and now, Falling Star Records. “It’s an honor to bring it full circle and open a vinyl shop in downtown Macon under the same name –Falling Star Records. Vinyl is making a comeback and we are excited to help grow the vinyl culture in Macon.”

In addition to vinyl records and turntables, the storefront also features pieces by local artists. Currently hanging in the shop are works by local artist Priscilla Esser featuring notable musicians who have played a role in Macon’s music history. Falling Star Records management intends on regularly exhibiting artwork by local artists.

The record shop officially opened on Friday, November 3 in conjunction with NewTown Macon’s First Friday. Falling Star Records is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 7pm.
