Read United Seeks Tutors to Help Students Improve Their Reading Skills

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Tuesday, August 1st, 2017

Read United invites those interested in becoming Reading Ambassadors to an introductory event on Thursday, August 3.

The Read United program, a United Way of Central Georgia initiative that strengthens elementary students’ reading skills, needs tutors for the 2017-18 academic school year.

The Read United team will explain what it takes to become a Reading Ambassador during a Books n’ Bingo information session at Vineville United Methodist Church (2054 Vineville Avenue in Macon). Starting time for the event is 6:30 p.m.

Participants will not only learn about the tutoring program, but they’ll play Bingo with a chance to win bookish prizes. Light refreshments will be served.

Sylvia McGee manages the AARP Foundation Experience Corps, which prepares those 50 years of age and older to volunteer as reading tutors. McGee, a retired Bibb County Schools deputy superintendent, said studies have proven that children need to be reading at grade level by the end of third grade or their chances of success in school will drop dramatically.

“It is unequivocally important for our students to receive face to face interaction and encouragement with their reading,” McGee said. “Understanding how you can help is the first step to changing a child’s life.”

Read United provides volunteer tutors with the training and materials they need before they enter the classroom. Volunteers are required to undergo a background check. Besides tutoring, the program offers other ways to get involved, such as reading to a classroom or donating books to children in need so they can build a personal library.
