Amerigroup Community Care of Georgia has selected Melvin (“Mel”) W. Lindsey to serve as president of the Medicaid health plan. Lindsey succeeds Francesca Gary, who recently assumed another leadership role in the organization. In his new role, Lindsey is responsible for all aspects of Amerigroup health plan operations in Georgia, ensuring members receive access to high quality care, and strengthening relationships in the community, with the state and among providers.

“Mel is a trusted and highly respected senior leader who has extensive knowledge of Amerigroup’s business, the Georgia market and our state customer,” said Brian Shipp, South Region Medicaid President for Amerigroup. “I’m confident Mel and our Amerigroup Georgia leadership team will effectively lead our Medicaid plan as it continues to provide trusted solutions for the members we are so privileged to serve.”

Lindsey joined Amerigroup in 2000 as an associate vice president of development. He played a key role in helping Amerigroup to win a Georgia Medicaid contract in 2006, and then assisted Amerigroup Georgia to launch its Medicaid managed care services across the entire state. Since that time, Lindsey has held numerous leadership positions supporting Amerigroup Georgia, including interim CEO in 2008. He has also supported Amerigroup’s various state Medicaid operations across the south region and most recently served as regional vice president of State Affairs for efforts in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. In 2015, Lindsey was appointed by Governor Nathan Deal to serve on the Georgia’s SHAPE Council to help combat childhood obesity across Georgia. He serves as board member of the Metro Atlanta YMCA and the Thanks Mom and Dad Fund, a charity created to honor parents, grandparents and mentors by supporting programs and services for the aging population. He earned a bachelor’s degree from MacMurray College in Illinois and a master’s degree in health administration from Governors State University of Illinois.

“Amerigroup Georgia is one of the nation’s most established, innovative and effective Medicaid health plans, and continually exemplifies a true passion for serving Georgians,” said Lindsey. “It has been an honor to play a role in the health plan’s inception, evolution and growth, and I look forward to continuing our work to improve health and lives across the state.”
