Historic Macon to Host Public Meeting Regarding Napier Heights National Register Historic District Nomination

Staff Report From Middle Georgia CEO

Wednesday, November 30th, 2016

Historic Macon staff members will hold a public information meeting concerning the proposed Napier Heights National Register Historic District and the National Register of Historic Places. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, November 30 from 5:30PM to 7PM at Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (2465 Hillcrest Ave).

Properties and neighborhoods are nominated for the National Register of Historic Places through the Georgia Preservation Division and the National Park Service. This meeting is free and open to the public. Historic Macon staff members will be available to answer questions and address concerns of residents in the proposed district. Approval of the district will allow Napier Heights property owners to take advantage of preservation incentives, including the State Income Tax Credit Program for Rehabilitated Historic Property and State Preferential Property Tax Assessment Program.

The National Register of Historic Places is our country’s official list of historic buildings, structures, sites, objects, and districts worthy of preservation. The Historic Preservation Division nominates eligible properties in Georgia to the National Register so property owners can receive preservation benefits and incentives. Currently, Macon has 14 National Register Historic Districts. Having a property included in the National Register of Historic Places does not restrict a property in any way.

“National Register Historic Districts and the preservation incentives available through this listing process are an integral part of Macon's current renaissance, which has been nationally recognized,” said Kim Campbell, Preservation and Education Coordinator of Historic Macon. “This listing will grant Napier Heights access to the same incentives as most other historic areas in town, so this neighborhood can also see these benefits.”
