The EAGLE is awarded to Georgia election offices that have gone above and beyond in serving their voters.

Houston County was honored for their outstanding work in election security and innovation, under the strong leadership of Debra Presswood. Earlier this Spring, Houston County demonstrated their willingness to lead their peers by hosting an Election Official and Law Enforcement Tabletop Exercise for regional county election officials and law enforcement. As an active member of GAVREO, the department has a reputation statewide of meeting challenges head-on and finding ways to overcome those challenges. They continually exhibit dedication and commitment to secure, accurate, and fair elections, with the priority of adherence to all Georgia laws.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger praised Houston County, saying "Election Directors like Debra Presswood lead the way for our state. Her skills and leadership instill confidence in Georgia voters and serve as a model for running smooth elections."

Dan Perdue, Chairman of the Houston County Board of Commissioners, stated, "I could not be more pleased that the Secretary of State’s Election Division has chosen to award Ms. Debra Presswood and the entire team...I and the entire Board of Commissioners have the utmost confidence in Ms. Presswood and the Board of Elections and support their efforts wholeheartedly. The survey was conducted by the Secure Elections Project, a group dedicated to commonsense, nonpartisan election security reforms that prevent election hacking and voter fraud without restricting eligible citizens from accessing the polls.

“It’s gratifying to see hard work pay off,” said Raffensperger. “Secure elections and accessible voting are my top priorities, which is why I supported Georgia’s legislative efforts to ban foreign interference in elections and will continue to push for a state constitutional amendment that bans non-citizens from voting. Georgia voters understand the hard work being done across the state to keep Georgia #1 for election security.”

According to the Secure Elections Project, “67 percent of Georgia Republicans and conservative-leaning independents are satisfied with the state’s system of elections,” and 84 percent agreed with the statement “my vote counts.” The group quoted one Georgia respondent as saying “Our election process is solid. We have checks and balances in place to make sure we have a fair election, and all citizens are able to vote the way they choose.”

The survey also found that respondents did not rank election security as a top-of-mind issue for those planning to vote in the 2024 election, but rather a mid-tier concern ranking behind illegal immigration and the economy.

“Restoring voter confidence in our system of elections in Georgia is exactly what we’ve been working toward,” said Raffensperger. “The integrity of our elections is my top priority, and this poll shows that voters are starting to take it as a given - something they assume is built into our system.”

“When voters know that our elections are secure, they can focus on other issues,” Raffensperger added. “We joke about ‘making elections boring again’ but what that means is creating trust in our process so that voters can trust the outcomes.”

The report, released today, identifies the varying expectations consumers have regarding technology, depending on whether they are dining at a fullservice restaurant or ordering delivery to their homes, as well as generational differences in preferences.

"Restaurant operators have tremendous entrepreneurial spirit, and they are constantly innovating – sometimes through new dishes or flavors, and sometimes through new business practices," said Michelle Korsmo, President & CEO of the National Restaurant Association. "More than 3 in 4 operators say technology gives them a competitive edge, and this research will also help operators find the right technology fit for their restaurant and their customers. In addition to valuable research on restaurant operator outlook, our research on the technology landscape in restaurants provides insights on consumer expectations that operators need to confidently evaluate their tech investments."

Key highlights include:

Expect to see more technology in the coming year – 55 percent of operators are planning investments to improve their service areas, while 60 percent are looking for technology that will enhance the customer experience.

16 percent of operators plan to invest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration (including voice recognition) in 2024.

82 percent of Gen Z adults are comfortable placing an order at a limited-service restaurant with a smart phone app.

65 percent of all adult consumers would be comfortable paying their check at a fullservice restaurant with a computer tablet at the table.

Restaurant operators are getting creative in how they expand technology offerings, paying close attention to consumer preferences, but generational differences persist. When asked how likely they'd be to interact with a tablet at the table, a solid majority of Gen Z adults, millennials and Gen Xers say they'd use these options but fewer than half of baby boomers said they would.

Compared with full-service and limited-service options, the use of technology in the delivery segment is already baked into consumers' expectation. They expect to be able to access, order, customize and pay for delivery orders through their computers or smartphones and if they can't, they'll order from somewhere else.

"The data clearly show that restaurant operators and owners are rapidly embracing technology and integrating it into their daily operations," said Hudson Riehle, Senior Vice President of Research and Knowledge for the National Restaurant Association. "Understanding which technologies customers in each segment would like to have, really want, and consider essential, provides operators with substantial opportunities to enhance the customer experience, amplify marketing and operate more efficiently."

Legislation guaranteeing Georgians the right to hunt and fish in the state’s navigable rivers and streams is on its way to Gov. Brian Kemp.

The state Senate gave final passage to House Bill 1172 Tuesday night 34-18, with a sizable contingent of opponents arguing it doesn’t go far enough to protect public access.

The General Assembly hurriedly passed a bill on the final day of last year’s legislative session guaranteeing public fishing and hunting rights after a property owner along the Upper Flint River had won a lawsuit seeking to ban public fishing along his stretch of the river.

After the legislation took effect last July, some waterfront property owners raised concerns over a provision that declared Georgia citizens’ right to use the state’s waterways under the “public trust doctrine.”

House Bill 1172 addressed property owners’ fears by removing that provision. But the legislation still retains its underlying purpose of ensuring Georgians’ right to hunt and fish in navigable waterways, Sen. Sam Watson, R-Moultrie, who carried the bill in the Senate, told his colleagues before the vote.

“We’re trying to tread the needle here to continue to allow passage, hunting, and fishing,” he said.

But Sen. Elena Parent, D-Atlanta, said taking away the public trust doctrine means Georgians will not be guaranteed the right to swim or wade in the state’s rivers and streams, including the right to stand on a riverbank and cast a fishing line. Waterfront property owners also will be able to prohibit scientific research in the state’s waterways.

“It’s very nearly impossible to do these activities without touching the stream bed,” she said.

Parent said the Georgia Wildlife Federation and the University of Georgia’s River Basin Center sent letters opposing the bill.

Senate President Pro Tempore John Kennedy, R-Macon, said the Metro Atlanta Chamber and multiple agribusiness organizations expressed support for the measure.

Senators defeated two amendments introduced Tuesday night, including one by Parent that would have restored the public trust doctrine to the legislation, drawing a charge from Kennedy that she was trying to gut the bill.

A House study committee held several hearings on the issue around the state last October that pit the interests of recreational fishers, fishing guides, and paddlers against those of farmers and waterfront property owners.
General Assembly OKs Coin-Operated Amusement Machines Reform Bill2024-03-28T00:00:00-04:00Staff Report From Georgia CEOtag:middlegeorgiaceo.com,2024-03-28:/news/2024/03/general-assembly-oks-coam-reform-bill
Capitol Beat is a nonprofit news service operated by the Georgia Press Educational Foundation that provides coverage of state government to newspapers throughout Georgia.
Legislation aimed at reforming Georgia’s coin-operated amusement machines (COAM) industry is headed to Gov. Brian Kemp’s desk after squeaking through the state Senate.

Senators passed House Bill 353 Tuesday night 29-24, the minimum number of votes needed to pass legislation in the 56-member chamber. The House followed suit later by a much larger margin of 148-18.

The bill would award non-cash redemption gift cards to winners that could be redeemed anywhere in Georgia for any legal product. Current law allows COAM winners to redeem their prizes only for merchandise sold in the store where the machine they played is located.

Supporters have argued gift cards would take away the temptation to illegally pay out cash prizes, contributing to a crime problem long associated with the COAM industry.

Senators amended the bill Tuesday night to increase the state’s share of the revenue generated from COAM proceeds from 10% to 13%. The additional 3% would produce an estimated $40 million a year for Georgia’s HOPE Scholarships and pre-kindergarten programs, said Sen. Clint Dixon, R-Buford, who carried the bill in the Senate.

The bill drew significant opposition from senators opposed both to the concept of the COAM games and to the percentage of the revenue the state gets to keep.

Sen. Bill Cowsert, R-Athens, said the COAM industry preys upon poor people who are tricked into believing they have a chance to hit it big.

“The machines are programmed to where you can’t win,” he said.

“We are slowly eroding what Georgia is about,” added Sen. Randy Robertson, R-Cataula. “We are sacrificing our very soul.”

Sen. Chuck Hufstetler, R-Rome, said COAMs will hurt the Georgia Lottery program because the 13% return amended into the COAM bill gives the state a far lower share of the take than the lottery, which typically contributes about 25% of the proceeds to HOPE and pre-k.

But Sen. David Lucas, D-Macon, said the COAM machines provide a form of entertainment to people without the means to travel to Las Vegas.

“What we’re trying to do is legislate morality,” he said.

Senators defeated an amendment proposed by Cowsert to significantly increase the state’s share of the revenue from COAM machines. Dixon argued such a move would kill the industry.

Georgia Power and state energy regulators have agreed on a plan to increase the Atlanta-based utility’s electrical generating capacity including the construction of three new gas combustion turbines at Plant Yates near Newnan.

The revenue that new capacity would produce for the company would more than offset the costs to generate the additional power, Aaron Abramovitz, Georgia Power’s chief financial officer and treasurer, told members of the state Public Service Commission (PSC) Wednesday. The resulting savings would save the average residential customer $2.89 a month from 2026 through 2028, he said.

“At Georgia Power, our customers are at the center of everything we do, and we are unwavering in our commitment to provide them with clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy,” Abramovitz testified.

“The stipulated agreement benefits all customers, and approval of this agreement will preserve and protect the reliability and quality of electric service our customers expect and support the continued economic development of our state … all while placing downward pressure on rates for all customers.”

Georgia Power submitted a request to the PSC last October for additional capacity to handle a growing demand for electricity.

Abramovitz said Wednesday the company has received commitments for an additional 2,600 megawatts of power from 11 large-load customers. A megawatt is enough electricity to power about 750 homes. The Georgia Association of Manufacturers is a party to the agreement, along with Georgia Power and the PSC’s Public Interest Advocacy Staff.

“This clearly indicates that these customers are coming, that significant load will materialize, and that the need to serve that load will occur sooner rather than later,” Abramovitz testified.

Besides the new gas turbines, Georgia Power’s plan to add generating capacity also includes power purchasing agreements with Mississippi Power – a sister company of Georgia Power – and Florida-based Santa Rosa Energy Center LLC, all involving natural gas.

Georgia Power also is proposing an expansion of its battery energy storage capacity and new and expanded distributed energy resources, such as rooftop solar, and demand response initiatives in which customers voluntarily agree to reduce energy use during periods of peak demand.

While the utility requested to develop, own, and operate 1,000 megawatts of battery energy storage, the agreement reduced that amount to 500 megawatts, including projects at Robins Air Force Base near Warner Robins and Moody Air Force Base near Valdosta.

Georgia Power agreed to issue a request for proposals on an expedited schedule to obtain the other 500 megawatts of battery energy storage.

The proposed agreement got pushback Wednesday from the Atlanta-based Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC).

“This is a fossil fuel bonanza,” said Jennifer Whitfield, a senior attorney with the group. “Not only is expanding dirty and unpredictably priced fossil fuels on the table. This agreement would allow Georgia Power to bypass important steps to protect its customers from rising energy bills.”

The SELC disputed Georgia Power’s assertion that the agreement will reduce customer bills, citing its own analysis predicting bills would go up by $44 per month during a two-year period when combined with a series of other rate hikes. The group also maintained the additional demand for energy could be met with renewable options including solar power and battery storage.

The commission is scheduled to vote on the agreement on April 16.

Military personnel, resilience experts and researchers from across the southeast learned how the University of Georgia is using nature-based solutions to strengthen military installations and their surrounding communities at the Southeastern Defense Communities Workshop March 13-14 in Athens.

Rachel Jacobson, assistant secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, gave the keynote address.

“The University of Georgia’s Defense Community Resilience Program is a model example of the kind of partnership we are looking to build on,” she said. “It will strengthen military readiness, environmental protection and economic development.”

The Defense Community Resilience Program (DCRP) is a collaborative partnership between the Carl Vinson Institute of Government and the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems (IRIS) at UGA. The program works with military installations and their surrounding communities to share UGA expertise in innovative nature-based engineering, infrastructure planning, governmental policy, economic development and community engagement to strengthen military and community resilience.

“UGA is already a trusted partner across Georgia. Fostering learning and collaboration among professionals will help forge new relationships to support enhanced resilience in communities so critical to national security,” said the Institute of Government’s Scott Pippin, program leader.

The university recently received $5 million in federal funding to support the Defense Community Resilience Program. Submitted by Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (GA-01), the funding builds upon the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Engineering With Nature® (EWN) initiative. The funds will allow the program to expand its reach to support more installations and communities.

“I’m proud to support the work going on at the University of Georgia as it works to bring its long history of public service and outreach to assist our military installations and their supporting communities,” Rep. Carter said in a video welcome for the workshop. “The longterm presence of these outreach experts in these communities sets the stage for developing resilient infrastructure and community development projects.”

DCRP is currently applying nature-based solutions to projects such as Laundry Creek at Fort Moore. The stream, which runs adjacent to Lawson Army Air Field, was relocated and channelized decades ago. The stream has since widened due to flooding and erosion, presenting a safety risk to approaching aircraft and Army personnel.

Rather than using a traditional concrete culvert to fix the problem, Daniel Wyatt, a resilience professional with the Institute of Government, suggested nature-based engineering to return the creek to its original location, which more effectively supports Fort Moore’s mission, aquatic connectivity, stormwater management and native ecosystems and species.

“It was a lightbulb going off moment,” said Brent Widener, chief of environmental management at Fort Moore. “We probably never would’ve considered this nature-based solution, so having a partner like UGA come in and present ideas that can save money and time, and also support mission, ecosystem and species resiliency is a win-win-win scenario.”

The event brought together engineers, legal experts and ecologists to identify common challenges and potential opportunities for more collaboration, which is a hallmark of the effort.

“We are moving away from tactical and reactive approaches and fusing these different disciplines, which involves holistic planning and system-level design with a focus on mission and especially people,” said Brian Bledsoe, Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor in Resilient Infrastructure and founding director of IRIS.

Representatives from military installations were encouraged by the networking opportunity and that UGA is taking the lead in organizing efforts and disseminating information among stakeholders.

“Universities are key because they’re able to do the trial-and-error and share their results so we can then benefit,” said Gary Herndon, natural and cultural resources manager for Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina.

Herndon, who is also a farmer, credited UGA with fulfilling its land- and sea-grant mission.

“That’s why the land grant was formed—to help farmers be successful and bridge that gap between education and practice,” he said.

Attendees also discussed the need for more communication across agencies and streamlining regulatory permitting and environmental compliance.

“Bringing these leaders together to discuss current challenges and identify future opportunities is central to our mission to inform and inspire innovative work on behalf of communities across Georgia,” said Rob Gordon, director of the UGA Institute of Government.

Jacobson also announced the development of a regional Intergovernmental Support Agreement (IGSA) between the Army and the University of Georgia that will allow installations across the southeast to tap into the expertise at UGA to develop climate planning and strengthen installation resilience. Established in 2013, IGSAs are public-private partnership agreements between Army installations and state and local government for the provision, receipt or sharing of installation support services. In Georgia, 22 IGSAs represent a total annual savings of $6.8 million.

“This is great news that strengthens relationships fostered by the UGA Institute of Government. We look forward to continuing to work with our military partners on solutions to transform communities across the state and the region,” Gordon said.

The Southeastern Defense Communities Workshop was hosted by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems (IRIS), Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant at UGA.

Mcdonald's USA and Krispy Kreme Announce Expanded National Partnership2024-03-28T00:00:00-04:00Staff Report From Georgia CEOtag:middlegeorgiaceo.com,2024-03-28:/news/2024/03/mcdonalds-usa-and-krispy-kreme-announce-expanded-national-partnership
We know nothing hits the spot quite like a fresh, melt-in-your-mouth doughnut paired with your go-to McCafé® order…and today, McDonald’s and Krispy Kreme have a sweet update for doughnut fans everywhere.

Krispy Kreme to provide fresh doughnuts daily at McDonald’s restaurants nationwide; Phased rollout will begin in 2H 2024 with nationwide availability expected by the end of 2026. (Photo: Business Wire)

The Golden Arches and Krispy Kreme, one of the most beloved sweet treat brands in the world, are teaming up for a national expansion. Fans will begin spotting Krispy Kreme doughnuts in their local McDonald’s restaurants later this year as part of a phased market rollout across the country. Nationwide availability at participating restaurants is expected by the end of 2026.

Three of Krispy Kreme’s most popular doughnuts will be delivered fresh to McDonald’s restaurants every day. They’ll be available individually, or in boxes of six, starting at breakfast and lasting throughout the day – while supplies last:

The iconic Original Glazed® Doughnut: A melt-in-your-mouth doughnut covered in Krispy Kreme’s signature glaze. The doughnut that started it all.

The Chocolate Iced with Sprinkles Doughnut: A chocolatey twist on the original, dipped in chocolate icing and covered in rainbow sprinkles.

The Chocolate Iced Kreme™ Filled Doughnut: Made with a light, fluffy dough and filled with a smooth Kreme™ filling then dipped in chocolate icing.

This follows a successful test at 160 McDonald’s restaurants in the Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky areas where consumer excitement and demand exceeded expectations. These pilot restaurants will continue to serve Krispy Kreme doughnuts during the nationwide rollout.

“Since the launch of breakfast nearly 50 years ago, we’ve continued to offer new menu items, flavors and experiences that have made McDonald’s an irreplaceable part of fans’ morning routines,” said Tariq Hassan, McDonald’s USA’s Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer. “This partnership is an exciting next step in that journey and a chance to unlock new business opportunities in the breakfast category and throughout the day. Our fans’ love for Krispy Kreme runs deep, and we can’t wait to make it even easier for them to satisfy their sweet tooth at McDonald’s restaurants across the country.”

“The top request we receive from consumers, every day, is, ‘please bring Krispy Kreme to my town.’ Partnering with McDonald’s on a national scale will provide our fans and doughnut lovers unprecedented daily access to fresh doughnuts and the joy that is Krispy Kreme,” said Krispy Kreme President and CEO Josh Charlesworth.

To celebrate this sweet partnership, Krispy Kreme will give one FREE Original Glazed® Doughnut to all guests who visit U.S. Krispy Kreme shops between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. today (Tuesday, March 26).

Krispy Kreme More Than Doubles Points of Access

“Significantly, by making Kreme Krispy accessible to fans nationwide through this partnership, we expect to more than double our points of access by the end of 2026. The partnership accelerates the development of our existing Delivered Fresh Daily channel, creating operating leverage through distribution density and production utilization,” said Charlesworth.

Krispy Kreme has been scaling its supply chain, building a support team, adding technology and new equipment, and enhancing field training to support its Delivered Fresh Daily expansion, which includes this phased rollout.

Krispy Kreme and McDonald’s will provide more details regarding the nationwide rollout in the coming months. So, get ready to sweeten up your day as these delicious treats make their way to your local McDonald’s restaurant soon!

S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Index Continues to Trend Upward in January 20242024-03-28T00:00:00-04:00Staff Report From Georgia CEOtag:middlegeorgiaceo.com,2024-03-28:/news/2024/03/sp-corelogic-case-shiller-index-continues-trend-upward-january-2024
S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI) today released the January 2024 results for the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Indices. The leading measure of U.S. home prices shows that three out of the 20 major metro markets reported month-over-month price increases. More than 27 years of history are available for the data series and can be accessed in full by going to www.spglobal.com/spdji/en/index-family/indicators/sp-corelogic-case-shiller.

YEAR-OVER-YEAR

The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price NSA Index, covering all nine U.S. census divisions, reported a 6.0% annual gain in January, up from a 5.6% rise in the previous month. The 10-City Composite showed an increase of 7.4%, up from a 7.0% increase in the previous month. The 20-City Composite posted a year-over-year increase of 6.6%, up from a 6.2% increase in the previous month. San Diego again reported the highest year-over-year gain among the 20 cities with an 11.2% increase in January, followed by Los Angeles, with an increase of 8.6%. Portland, though holding the lowest rank after reporting the smallest year-over-year growth, retained an upward trend with a 0.9% increase this month.

MONTH-OVER-MONTH

The U.S. National Index and the 20-City Composite showed a continued decrease of 0.1%, and 10-City Composite remained unchanged in January.

After seasonal adjustment, the U.S. National Index, the 20-City Composite, and the 10-City Composite all posted month-over-month increases of 0.4%, 0.1%, and 0.2% respectively.

ANALYSIS

"U.S. home prices continued their drive higher," says Brian D. Luke, Head of Commodities, Real & Digital Assets at S&P Dow Jones Indices. "Our National Composite rose by 6% in January, the fastest annual rate since 2022. Stronger gains came from our 10- and 20-City Composite indices, rising 7.4% and 6.6%, respectively. For the second consecutive month, all cities reported increases in annual prices, with San Diego surging 11.2%. On a seasonal adjusted basis, home prices have continued to break through previous all-time highs set last year."

"We've commented on how consistent each market performed during 2023 and that continues to be the case. While there is a large disparity between leaders such as San Diego versus laggards such as with Portland, the broad market performance is tightly bunched up. This is also true of high and low tiers. The average annual gains between high and low tiers across cities tracked by the indices is just 1.1%. Low price tiered indices have outperformed high priced indices for 17 months. Homeowners most likely saw healthy gains in the last year, no matter what city you were in, or if it was in an expensive or inexpensive neighborhood. No matter which way you slice it, the index performance closely resembled the broad market."

"On a monthly basis, home prices continue to struggle in the face of elevated borrowing costs. Seventeen markets dropped over the last month, while Minneapolis has posted a 2.4% decline over the prior three months. Only Southern California and Washington D.C. have stood up the rising wave of interest rates and deliver positive returns to start the year. San Diego rose 1.8% in January, followed by DC with 0.5% and Los Angeles at 0.1%."

Table 3 below shows a summary of the monthly changes using the seasonally adjusted (SA) and non-seasonally adjusted (NSA) data. Since its launch in early 2006, the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Indices have published, and the markets have followed and reported on, the non-seasonally adjusted data set used in the headline indices. For analytical purposes, S&P Dow Jones Indices publishes a seasonally adjusted data set covered in the headline indices, as well as for the 17 of 20 markets with tiered price indices and the five condo markets that are tracked.

“This study offers us some insight into how much students are estimated to be paying yearly for a four-year university program whilst living in-state. Whilst tuition fees have the largest impact on the total annual cost, having cheaper options for room and board can certainly make university and college more attractive to prospective students.

“These total costs can similarly be reduced by taking available scholarships or financial aid into account, but many students will need to calculate whether they can cover these fees by themselves when considering their potential options for university programs. It will be interesting to see whether any of the ranked positions change in upcoming years and if these total costs are impacting the yearly enrollment numbers in each state.”

Macon internal medicine physician Dr. Russell O'Neal announced today that his practice, Russell G. O’Neal M.D., LLC, will be relocating to a new office on Bass Road. O’Neal has served patients at his current location near Piedmont Health Center for nearly 20 years. The practice's new facility is located at 1760 Bass Road, Suite 200, near the intersection of Bass Road and Riverside Drive. The practice will start seeing patients at the new location on April 8.

"We're excited to be making this change," said O'Neal. "Our new location will offer our patients an improved experience and will move our services closer to our rapidly expanding base of patients in the North Bibb and South Monroe area.”

A native of Roberta, O'Neal graduated from Stratford Academy before pursuing his medical education at the University of Georgia and the Mercer University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Emory University in Atlanta. As an internist, he provides primary care, acute care, and health management services for adults aged 18 and up.

"It's important for every adult to have a primary care physician. We're not just there for you when something's wrong; we provide preventive care, lifestyle guidance, and important screenings to help identify healthcare concerns before they become problems," said O'Neal. "Whether you're the picture of health or are managing something like hypertension or diabetes, we're here to help."

O'Neal is currently accepting new patients. His practice accepts most major forms of health insurance and offers a reduced-cost direct-payment fee schedule for patients who are uninsured or underinsured. Services provided include regular physicals and wellness checks, management of chronic conditions, vaccines, screenings, acute care for most minor illnesses or injuries, medication management, and all other primary care needs.

“I’d like to invite anyone in Middle Georgia who’s in need of a primary care physician to give us a call and come see us in our new office,” said O’Neal. “Let us help you maintain your health now and in the future.”

You may have heard that Congress passed a spending bill over the weekend. Among the many items in the bill were provisions for hiring new border agents, something Georgia U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff is noting in an announcement about the bill.

“Chaos at the southern border remains a serious threat to U.S. national security. That is why I have worked consistently to hire and deploy more CBP officers,” Ossoff said. “With the passage of this law, we will hire and deploy a record number of officers to stop human trafficking, drug trafficking, and other national security threats at the southern border.”

The funding will allow the border patrol to hire additional agents and hit a workforce of 22,000, a record high. The bill will also ensure border agents receive their overtime pay.

U.S. Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA 8) felt differently over in the other chamber. “The House passed another appropriations bill to avoid a government shutdown. I voted against this legislation because it contained millions of dollars for partisan Democratic funding projects from the Senate that I disagree with,” said Scott. “It is wrong to tie appropriations with leftist priorities instead of border security, and 111 Republicans joined me in voting no for this legislation.”

U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA 7) voted in favor of the bill, highlighting some of those policies that likely got Scott’s no vote, among them a $1 billion increase in climate change and resilience activities at the Department of Defense, blocking attempts to limit abortion access and a $1 billion increase for child care and Head Start programs.

“Families in our communities and across our nation cannot afford a government shutdown. Too many important programs would be at risk,” McBath said. “With these funding bills, Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate united and produced legislation to make government work for the American people. We are reducing drug costs and increasing the access and affordability of high-quality child care. These bills help keep workers safe and ensure they are paid what they are owed. We are making strategic investments to help keep communities safe and secure. We are investing in everyday Americans.”

Ossoff has also introduced the Deploy Fentanyl Scanners Act to deploy scanners at border entry points to help locate and identify fentanyl being smuggled across the border in personal vehicles. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) spent millions of dollars on the high-tech scanners but the agency lacks the funding to actually locate them where they need to be and install them. They are currently sitting in warehouses. Estimates from the CBP are that 95 percent of the fentanyl seized at the border is brought in through personal vehicles.

“Illegal fentanyl trafficking is devastating Georgia families and putting our kids at risk,” Ossoff said. “My new bill will surge new fentanyl detection resources to the border to help detect and prevent fentanyl from crossing the border.”
Robins SAPR Invites Airmen to Upcoming Events, Highlights Awareness2024-03-28T00:00:00-04:00C Arcetag:middlegeorgiaceo.com,2024-03-28:/news/2024/03/robins-sapr-invites-airmen-upcoming-events-highlights-awareness
Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month is observed every April. Employees from the Robins Air Force Base Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office is inviting Team Robins Airmen to the upcoming events that will raise awareness on SAPR resources.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April is crucial to recognize the tireless efforts of this office in advocating for victims and shattering the stigma surrounding sexual assault, not just during this designated month, but every single day," said Candace Franks, SAPR office program manager.

The SAPR office is hosting a variety of events in April, including a panel, “#MenToo Panel: The Hidden Fears of Male Survivors in the Military.” One of the panelists is Tech Sgt. Kenneth Oliver, occupational safety noncommissioned officer in charge, 43rd Air Mobility Operations Group, Pope Army Airfield, Fort Liberty, North Carolina.

He shared his experiences as a sexual assault survivor and the importance of raising awareness that it can happen to anyone.

In April 2008, Oliver said he was drugged and sexually assaulted by his former roommate. After suppressing his emotions for years, he finally talked about it five years and three months later.

“It happens to men too, and men don’t need to be ashamed to bring it up,” he said. “I wish I would have brought it up sooner, because there wouldn’t have been a lot of suffering over time. At the end of the day, it’s about your mental health and your capacity to bounce back.”

He said he encourages victims who haven’t reported it to do so, in order to begin their healing process.

"Report it not so that someone could get in trouble or to feel vindicated, report it simply so you can begin the healing process, because you will not be able to do it alone,” Oliver said. “If you have reported it and are still having thoughts, I would encourage you to seek a higher purpose instead of staying in your grief. You can forgive without forgetting."

He shared SAPR events like this are an important platform to raise awareness for Airmen and their leadership too.

“The best way to help victims heal is to give them an opportunity to share their story and background. It also gives warning to any perpetuators or potential perpetuators that there are real consequences to this.”

The SAPR office guides Airmen through the process of restricted and unrestricted reporting and seeking justice. They also provide crisis intervention, non-clinical advocacy services and medical support. When needed, they collaborate with base agencies, law enforcement and community organizations.

For any questions, contact the SAPR office at 78abw.cvk.work@us.af.mil or the 24/7 response line at 478-327-7272.
