Shopping Small Helps Customers Save Big in Downtown Macon

Staff Report

Friday, November 17th, 2023

NewTown Macon has partnered with 45 of downtown Macon’s locally owned and operated businesses to host Shopping Power Hours during Small Business Saturday. From 8 am to 6 pm on Saturday, November 25, participating downtown businesses will be featured in hourly blocks, offering exclusive discounts and promotions during their designated "Shopping Power Hour." The concept is simple but dynamic: during a specific hour, several businesses will provide deep discounts, and as the clock ticks, a new set of businesses will take the stage with their own unique deals.

Discounts and promotions range from 25% to 50% off on select purchases, BOGO deals, discounted drink and food specials, and free gifts with purchases. All participating businesses are ones that are unique and can only be found in downtown Macon. NewTown’s Main Street Board developed the concept of Shopping Power Hours to encourage Maconites to explore and patronize downtown businesses on Small Business Saturday and throughout the holiday season. Downtown Macon boasts 40 retailers, 55 restaurants, 8 art galleries, 32 bars and entertainment venues, and 5 historic theaters that are all locally owned and operated. According to a study by Civic Economics, for every $100 spent with a locally-owned business, $68 stays in the community. When spending the same at a non-local business like a national chain, only $43 stays in the community.

“Shopping with downtown’s locally owned businesses is a way to make a small investment in Macon-Bibb County and support our fellow neighbors,” said Emily Hopkins, Vice President of External Affairs at NewTown Macon. “This Small Business Saturday offers customers a chance to enjoy exciting savings while ensuring that local dollars stay local.
