There was a time when workers compensation, property, general liability and auto insurance provided adequate protection for many businesses, but no longer.  These policies now represent a minimum level of coverage.

"We're insuring more complex risks today from employment practices liability to cyber liability," said Bo Hart, vice president of Doherty, Duggan, Hart & Tiernan (DDHT) in the Macon office.

"We help our clients find out if they have any gaps in coverage, and provide solutions to fill those gaps with additional coverages that are now available."

According to "5 Reasons You Should Have Cyber Liability Insurance" a 2013 article on inc.com, cyber liability insurance can help cover the costs of a business interruption, notifying customers of a breach or hiring a public relations firm to help restore a damaged reputation.  Employment practices liability includes risks associated with wrongful termination, sexual harassment, discrimination, invasion of privacy and other employment-related liabilities.  Integrating cyber liability coverage and employment practice liability coverage with other policies such as general liability is where a good insurance agent can help.

DDHT is a full-service independent insurance agency that offers a comprehensive line of insurance products with a primary focus on commercial property and casualty lines of coverage.  The agency has six offices in Albany, Athens, Cordele, Macon, Sandersville and Warner Robins and is one of the largest locally owned independent insurance agencies in Georgia. DDHT has no restrictions regarding the businesses that they insure.

“We cover a wide range of businesses.  There are really no limitations in terms of the types and size of organizations that we work with,” said Joe Swaim, DDHT sales executive in the Macon office.

Built on relationships

According to Hart, DDHT is an organization that lends itself to local decision-making.  Decision-makers are also owners and have an awareness of what's going on in the local community.  In addition, the agency has an in-house dedicated claims team that is available 24/7 to DDHT clients.

"We handle service in-house and as a result, we are able to take excellent care of our customers.  We never lose the personal touch," Hart said.

"Most business owners want a relationship with their insurance provider and we have the stability to provide that relationship."

DDHT has very low turnover among its employees.  According to Hart, many employees have been with the firm for 15 to 20 years.

Growing in Macon

DDHT opened its office in Macon nine years ago.  Since then the office has grown through local hires.

"We're a growing firm, always adding employees including new sales representatives and service people," Swaim said.

According to Hart, DDHT also believes in giving back to its communities.  In Macon, the firm supports a number of local events including the Greek Festival at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church and the Advocacy Resource Center's New Year's Eve Cherry Blossom Ball Drop.  The firm also supports Jay's Hope, a nonprofit working to improve the quality of life for children with cancer and their families in Georgia.
